چکیده

Electrodiagnostic procedures have contributed to the certainty of diagnosis of a variety of neurological and neuromuscular diseases in animals. Widespread use of electrodiagnosis is limited by equipment costs and training of personnel. However, many of these procedures are used routinely in case work-ups in veterinary colleges or specialty practices. The purpose of this chapter is to present a brief review of the basic electrophysiology and methodology for a wide range of electrodiagnostic techniques. Examples of normal and abnormal recordings are presented, but the reader is referred to the literature for more specific information [1-22] or detailed descriptions of electrodiagnostic findings in specific neurological diseases. In addition, the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (www.aaem.net) provides instructional materials and courses on electromyography at both basic and advanced levels.

A Signal Conditioning Approach for the Extraction of the Oscillatory Potential from the Electroretinogram

A SIGNAL CONDITIONING APPROACH FOR THE EXTRACTION OF THE OSCILLATORY POTENTIAL FROM THE ELECTRORETINOGRAM by Peter Haines Derr The oscillatory potential (OP), a signal component of the electroretinogram (ERG), was investigated to determine correlation of the OP and pathological conditions of the inner retina. Large transients characterize the ERG. Such transients stimulate a filter's natural re...

Isolation of faster components in the electroretinogram and visually evoked response in man.

The electroretinogram (ERG) response evoked in man by intense illumination pre sents a series of oscillatory potentials super imposed on the b-wave." These oscillatory potentials are of clinical importance, since in the presence of certain diseases they are reduced or disappear prior to some changes of the aand b-waves. Measurement of the amplitude of the os cillatory potential is difficult,...

A Chronic Implant to Record Electroretinogram, Visual Evoked Potentials and Oscillatory Potentials in Awake, Freely Moving Rats for Pharmacological Studies

Electroretinogram (ERG), widely used to study the pharmacological effects of drugs in animal models (e.g., diabetic retinopathy), is usually recorded in anesthetized rats. We report here a novel simple method to obtain chronic implantation of electrodes for simultaneous recording at the retinal and cortical levels in freely moving, unanesthetized animals. We recorded cortical (VEPs) and retinal...

Investigating the frequency characteristics of the electroretinogram signal in patients with central retinal vein occlusion

Background: Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is the second most common retinal vascular disorder after diabetic retinopathy. In this study, we tried to examine the potentials of time-frequency methods for differentiating the eyes with CRVO. Materials and methods: Twenty patients with unilateral CRVO were included in this study. Their contralateral normal eyes were considered as the control...

The photopic electroretinogram in congenital stationary night blindness with myopia.

Previous studies have reported that subjects affected with congenital stationary night blindness and myopia demonstrated some photopic (cone) abnormalities in their electroretinogram (ERG). By comparing the photopic ERG elicited with a threshold and a suprathreshold stimulus it was found that, at threshold, no significant differences were noted both in the peak time and in the amplitude of ERGs...

The visually evoked subcortical potential: is related to the electroretinogram?

The visually evoked subcortical potential (VESP) of mean latencies P21-N28-P36 has previously been recorded at an electrode site around the mastoid process. An initial topographical study of the potential indicated that it was independent of the electroretinogram (ERG), and monocular stimulation showed bilateral reduction, which suggests that the VESP is of postchiasmal origin. A more detailed ...
